Robert Promoted

Robert Promoted
Robert has almost recovered from having had  pneumonia. He isn’t 100% fit, but he is well on the way to being. Robert was promoted to Lance Corporal just a couple of weeks ago…He deserves it.

Carol & I are doing the Manchester to Liverpool bike ride on Sunday (29th May) in aid off “Cop A Feel” (Cool Name) they promote breast cancer awareness. After our recent cycling trip from Sale to Anglesey it will be cool to not have any mountains to pedal up.
Were cycling in Belgium round about the middle of June the plan is to cycle to Bruges and Ypres, we are totally avoiding hills..lol

What does Charlie Sheen have to say

Where there were four, there are now three.    Thank’s Charlie

A Tough Month

Robert (Our Little Soldier) has been on a army training course in Scotland for the past 4 weeks. He’s been living outdoors the whole time, wind, rain, snow, ice the lot, at the end of the course yesterday he was immediately sent and admitted to a military hospital , he has pneumonia.

Turns out he had it for the last couple of days of the exercise, but he wanted to finish the course (it goes towards qualifying him to be promoted to corporal) of course he is now in quite a bad way.The army doctors said he should be ok, without any permanent damage. He’s on big doses of antibiotics right now ,he will need a lot of rest (He wont mind that he has only slept in a bed 20 times in the past year) he will be able to re-join his regiment in Cyprus in a fortnights time.He would go now if he could he loves Cyprus.

They let him come home with us they said he will recover quicker here at home with us, good job I didn’t sell the bed…lol

Our Little Soldier

Hello Proud Guardian Angel PC Support Member

We thank you for your many many emails, letters phone calls and text messages to ourselves , family and of course ‘Our Little Soldier’ Robert.

It’s simply wonderful. Many of our members and customers also have family and loved ones serving in Afghan its good and sometimes a little frightening to speak to them and listen to their stories.

The Duke of Lancaster’s 2nd Battalion (our little soldiers regiment) have been going through tough times they have lost some of their very best. The Lancaster’s losses have been well covered by the media, never more so than in recent weeks.

Robert was abe to call us by sat phone from his FPB. He said that the sprit of the lads in his platoon  despite the awful  losses they have endured has made them more determined to get the job done , done well and the Taliban out. ‘The Fighting Lancaster’s’ is a name they and their fallen comrades have truly earned.

Folks say to us you most be proud of Robert, you bet we are, and proud of every single one of those brave brave lads and their families. Each time a Lancaster falls we feel the pain and loss of that family deeply and intensely. It’s the feeling of a death grip around our  heart.

‘There but for the grace of God go I’

Your support has helped Carol & I through the darkest , scariest times of our lives. Times when we have sat in silence and quiet , neither wanting to speak yet each knowing the others thoughts, neither of us wanting to put flesh on those dark troubled thoughts.

All we now wish for is the next few weeks to pass quickly and safely for Robert and all those young brave ‘Lions’ in Afghan.

Robert will be flown out by 216 Squadron ( the beer flight) some time in November.

Wing Commander Steve Chadwick started ”Beer for the boys” when he took over 216 Squadron, which operates the military’s fleet of TriStar aircraft based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

”I felt it would be a nice thing to do after the guys had done their time in theatre, on behalf of a grateful nation and the RAF,” he said.

”The principle is that a single can of cold beer thrust into the hand of a soldier once the TriStar is safely away from the ground and out of harm’s way marks the point at which he knows he is going home after six months of fighting.

”It is just a token, but an important one.”

Anyone who wants to contribute to the ”Beer for the boys” fund can send a cheque, made payable to ”SIF Funds, RAF Brize Norton” and with ”Beer for the boys” written on the back, to Wing Cdr Chadwick at 216 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire OX18 3LX.

That is COOL

Graham & Carol

 Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride

Carol & undertook the ride a couple of weekends ago along with our team mates Jeff & Tim , again  in support of Christies. It was by far the most challenging one  to date , it was wet , it was windy , the last few miles were completed in the teeth of a gale ..was it hard ? you bet it was hard , were we knackered ? 64 miles…  you bet we were knackered …was it fun… IT WAS A BLAST. To everyone that took part , support people and riders , I doff my cap and say Thank you.

Christies is way cool , there cant be many that haven’t had a friend or relative under the care of Christies at sometime in their life. The Christies deserves our support. We were behind the door seeking sponsorship this year (things have been a little hectic here at the Boat House) We have already had some generous Members Sponsor our ride however retrospective sponsorship would be very welcome.

 Our Little Soldier

Robert (Kgn Purkiss, Duke Of Lancaster’s) has been re-deployed to the troubled region of Sangin in Afgan. He and the lads went last Saturday. We spoke to Robert Saturday morning just before departure he said that he and the lads were in good sprit and ready to get on with the job and anything the ‘job’ might throw at them , so to speak.

They must have had enough of the Sun , Sand , Beer and Girls in Cyprus, either that or it’s the Sergeant Major they have had enough of making them do square bashing  …LOL

God Speed to all the lads and lassies serving in Afgan.

 Digital News

Today, the broadband map of Britain will begin to be redrawn. At a summit at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, two cabinet politicians – Jeremy Hunt and Caroline Spelman – will join “digital champion” Martha Lane Fox, communications minister Ed Vaizey and scores of industry giants to set about the challenging task of delivering what Mr Hunt has promised will be “the best broadband network in Europe by 2015”.

According to Mr Vaizey, who will open the “Broadband Industry Day”, the aim is for the Government to work out what industry perceives to be the barriers to expanding the networks.

Diaspora alternative Facebook project snags $200,000 funding

Four enterprising US students have managed to secure over $200,000 funding to set up an open source Facebook alternative.

Diaspora, as it’s known, has been launched off the back of the recent furore over Facebook’s privacy policy.

The New York Times wrote an article on their concept and initial aim to raise $10,000 to keep them going while coding the project – although they’ve ended up exceeding that target by a factor of twenty, in less than a month.

Diaspora will let users store their own data, and have full control over what happens to that information, and who it’s shared with.

The crew of four will be locking themselves away over the summer and constructing Diaspora while living off takeaways and caffeine drinks (no stereotypes here, honest guv’nor).

Are we witnessing the genesis of a real rival to Facebook? There’s a hell of a way to go, for sure. And of course Mark Zuckerberg has recently introduced a revamp of his site’s privacy policy which may go some way to assuaging concerns amongst users.

That said, achieving this level of funding and publicity inside a month flat is pretty impressive, so you never know…

Diaspora, in case you were wondering, means a “dispersion of people from their original homeland” (i.e. Facebook).

We’d have plumped for a less highbrow alternative name, something like “Footmagazine”.

Zeus banking virus is back warns security firm

Zeus, a virus that steals online banking details from infected computer users, is more powerful than ever, warns a web security company.

Trusteer says it has spotted the Trojan virus in one of every 3,000 of the 5.5m computers it monitors in the US and UK.

Zeus 1.6 can infect Windows machines using Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers, the company claims.

The malware steals login information by recording keystrokes when the infected user is on a list of target websites.

These websites are usually banks and other financial institutions.

The user’s data is then sent to a remote server to be used and sold on by cyber-criminals.

“We expect this new version of Zeus to significantly increase fraud losses, since nearly 30% of internet users bank online with Firefox and the infection is growing faster than we have ever seen before,” said Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer.

DIY virus

In March 2010, many parts of the command and control (C&C) system for the Zeus botnet were destroyed when the Kazakhstani ISP that was being used to administer it was cut off.

However, it does not take long for malware controllers to spring up elsewhere, and toolkits for assembling botnets are readily available on the black market.

“There are plenty of opportunities for people to purchase access to these systems through underground chat rooms,” said Dr JD Marsters, from the department of electronics and computer science at the University of Southampton.

“It’s a game of cat and mouse between anti-virus vendors and botnet developers.”

Computer users should ensure that their anti-virus software and operating systems are kept up to date, he advised

Another one got.!!! Were glad to have played our part..
